Painted Pot Dreams series is up!

Painted Pot Dreams

I've taken about 800 photos of an antique painted jardineire that sits in a south-facing bay where I  often come to enjoy the sun. Its colors and patterns, and the play of light on its surface, have provided an endless source of images, from representational to very abstract. This series also shows off some of the powerful digital tools that are available now for image manipulation.

"Round Things" addition

A new self -portrait, taken with a camera app called Twist that proceeds very slowly, so you can distort the image as it exposes.

It's one of the apps I feature in the Camera segment of the Apps for Artists course.

Blue Plate Special

While visiting friends in Colorado, some fancy home-grown designer beans caught my eye. I took them outside to photograph, choosing a blue spatter-ware plate as a background. But when I set the plate on the patio table in the shade of a big red umbrella, a whole galaxy of stars and nebulae exploded into view amid a riot of red and purple arcs.

I soon forgot about the beans. They didn't stand a chance.

"Cherry Travels
Through a Wormhole"

Cherry season is here, and I've been having a great time with a bowl of cherries. This one ties into a number of themes I've been developing over the years -- cherries, stars, swirls, circles, reflections, refractions.

"The Audience Reacts"

I got so many interesting photos that I couldn't decide, so there are two Catches today. Cherries have so much personality, with their little round bodies and their shiny red surfaces. The stems, which usually read as long necks with little heads perched on top, are functioning here as sort of top-knots. I was struck by how many different expressions this group has. It makes me wonder what they're watching.

One problem -- I kept eating the models!

First Paintograph

This was my first layered photographic painting,  done early in my  art-apps obsession, to test out my ideas and theories and some artist apps capabilities. I used four photos, four or five apps and probably seven or eight  layers. The inspiration is from some photos taken of a struggling houseplant, whose drooping leaves were beginning to turn gold.

I was so pleased with the process and the results that I am now (and probably forever) hooked
.
I'm still not sure what to call these paintings.
"Layered photographic painting" is very long. "Paintograph" or "Artograph" is shorter but could have any number of other meanings. "Manipulated photograph" doesn't really catch the painting side of it.

Any other good ideas?

Paintography

The Paintography page is up,  showing some of the layered photographic paintings  I've made. Some have already been in a few local juried shows, so they've been well received.

"WINTER SKIRTS"
Pastel painting Step-by-Step demo

This is part of the "Of Cabbages and Things" series.  I didn't make any of these colors up! (Well, mostly not.)
I really enjoyed doing this painting.

Because of this blog, I'm getting much better at documenting the steps, something I should have been doing all along.

APPS for ARTISTS
The home page for the Apps for Artist section is up.

There are several more apps pages that are still being populated. These things always take longer than you think they should, but I hope to get them all up soon.

NEW NAME!

And the winner is ...
Nancy Freeman Studio
(NancyFreemanStudio.com)

Nothing flashy, just easy to remember and descriptive.
Now, since the name isn't fancy or compelling, the artwork will have to do the job, as it should be.

Many thanks to all who responded. There were a number of thoughtful suggestion, and several more good options.

Beach Glass

BEACH GLASS

A brief stay at the beach yielded a treasure trove of photos of a single environment seen through a single wine glass. It's not about the glass or the view, of course, but about the play of light, color and shape that can create a variety of abstract compositions.
I can hardly wait to get to the whole series, but it will have to get in line.

Here's a teaser.

A dandy new addition to my "Round Things" collection!

Whenever I stop to ponder the visual world, a thousand abstract compositions present themselves.

Sometimes I have to take them as is, sometimes I can do things to affect them.

Here's looking at you...

I am finally, after all these decades of being a computer artist, putting up an online presence. You can't rush into these things.
I am very pleased so far with the website, but there is still much to be done. Sorting through just this year's image production is a huge unfinished project.

I think this site will be very like a garden: never really done, a process rather than an accomplishment, always in need of attention, constantly changing. And like a garden, it will reward in proportion to the effort put into it.

It deals with the wide variety of image creation that I have always been engaged in. It will include the traditional media work that has supported me all these years, and provide an appropriate  forum to showcase the ever expanding production of digital work, the results of my decades long use of and love affair with the computer as an art medium.

As you look through it, remember that this website is a work in progress, and I'm new to this work.

Thanks!
