"Aquatic Garden" Pastel Sketch

"Aquatic Garden" pastel sketch,

done as a demo in class on the topic of underpainting, and how useful it could be. Based on some photos from a few weeks ago at the National Aquatic garden. Most of the aquatic plants were already gone for the winter, but there was lots of sunshine and bits of autumn color. It's about 8" X 12".

Pastel painting.
Many thanks to Karen Keating, juror, who awarded this painting Best in Show at the Capitol Hill Art League in the "I See Scapes" juried exhibition. Although this is one of my all time favorites, it didn't seem to appeal to judges and was rejected several times, until I changed the color of the mat to off white. I've certainly learned my lesson in that regard.
