"Sunspill"

"SUNSPILL" pastel, 12 X 16
I began this river sunrise scene as a demo a few semesters ago. I'm back at the river for a little working retreat, and am focusing on finishing some pastel paintings while I'm here.
I often use these river view demos to talk about the nature of reflections and water

"Still Morning" Pastel Painting

"Still Morning", pastel, 12 x 18
I've been working on completing some of the many painting that are almost done. Now that I'm teaching two classes, I do 18 demos each semester. The starts are most important, so most of the paintings don't get finished in class. Now we're staying again at a wonderful place on the Northern Neck in Virginia, dog-and-house sitting for some traveling friends, and having a kind of working retreat. There is a lovely sunrise view here, and I have finished one of the paintings of it that I started several semesters ago.

"THE MIDDLE OF THE JOURNEY", Pastel
The third generation of a long running journey series. This is one of three panels. (the other two are still in progress). It was included in the June show at the gallery at the Torpedo factory, always a stiff competition.

"South Bay Window"
Watercolor

I've been working with carving shapes away using a "lifting off' technique with a wet brush. This  is done on Montval paper, which responds very well to this technique. I especially like it for thin plant shapes, like the leaves of the palms, and for tree branches.

"Appalachian Trail, Early Spring"
Watercolor

This is from the portion of the trail near Bear's Den Lodge, close to where Highway 7 crosses into west Virginia.

I have a tiny watercolor set and a small pad of Montval watercolor paper that travel very easily, plus a few brushes with hollow squeeze handles that carry their own water. Very easy to travel or hike with.

I've been working with "lifting off " techniques, which the Montval paper does very well.

Scarf Prototypes are in!

It's very exciting to see them in person, and to feel them. The silk is excellent quality, thick and soft. the colors are amazing, and the detail is very fine, much better than I was expecting. I'm very pleased with these results, in fact they are gorgeous! To get more views, and to order them, go to "Own A Cabbage"

"Aquatic Garden" pastel sketch,

done as a demo in class on the topic of underpainting, and how useful it could be. Based on some photos from a few weeks ago at the National Aquatic garden. Most of the aquatic plants were already gone for the winter, but there was lots of sunshine and bits of autumn color. It's about 8" X 12".

Best in Show - "Interplay"

 "INTERPLAY"
Pastel painting.
Many thanks to Karen Keating, juror, who awarded this painting Best in Show at the Capitol Hill Art League in the "I See Scapes" juried exhibition. Although this is one of my all time favorites, it didn't seem to appeal to judges and was rejected several times, until I changed the color of the mat to off white. I've certainly learned my lesson in that regard.

Own A Cabbage - The cabbage storefront is open

OWN A CABBAGE!
For all the nice people who have been inquiring about buying a Cabbage Masterpiece, I have finally opened a little store for the Cabbage Art & Scarf Invitational results. It's my first attempt, so there are probably some glitches, but I'm still pleased with it.

The scarves are also available there, but not for long . I plan to place only one order of scarves, in early November. Besides being an extremely limited edition, they will be hand signed and numbered. "Be the only one on your block (probably city, maybe state) to own a Cabbage Invitational Scarf!"

Many thanks to all the collaborators, backers, and all the thoughtful people on Facebook that have responded so positively to my work.

"FIRE TREE, WATER DAY"

Many, many thanks to juror Stan Sperlak for awarding my original pastel painting the 2nd Prize in the 2014 APS Juried National Exhibition, at the Bascom Center for the Visual Arts in Highlands, NC, from October 4, 2014 through January 4, 2015. Bunzl Gallery.

Getting any prize at the national level is a big honor to me, so I am especially pleased to reach this level. The news definitely made my day!
